Structured Problem Solving

Structured Problem Solving (SPS) is a core component of Iter Digital’s Digital Lean Production System.
It is available as a standalone product but delivers the greatest value when used alongside the Daily Management suite – particularly Accountability.
SPS provides a consistent, governed approach to solving problems, ensuring investigations follow proven methodologies and result in effective, sustained improvements – not just quick fixes.

One system for all problem‑solving activity

SPS brings all problem‑solving investigations together in a single, structured system using common Lean methodologies, including:

  • 4C
  • PDCA
  • A3
  • 8D
  • Bespoke methodologies tailored to your business

Teams can choose the most appropriate approach for each investigation and, if required, convert to a different methodology as the investigation evolves. This flexibility ensures problem solving remains fit‑for‑purpose while maintaining consistency across the organisation.

 

Enforced structure, not optional discipline

SPS enforces the “structured” element of problem solving.Each investigation progresses through clearly defined stages, and teams must complete each phase before moving to the next. This prevents critical steps from being skipped and reinforces good problem‑solving practice.Key capabilities include:

  • Controlled progression through investigation stages
  • Mandatory completion of each phase
  • Clear ownership and accountability throughout
 

Integrated action management

Actions are linked directly to each stage of the investigation and tracked to completion. SPS integrates fully with the wider Iter Digital platform:

  • Actions can be transferred directly from Daily Management into SPS
  • SPS actions appear alongside all other actions in the Iter Digital suite
  • Users manage all actions from one central place

This ensures corrective actions are followed through and improvements are sustained over time.
